Blogging Diabetes Podcast #46. I’d never heard of Diabetic Alert Dog before, but it sounds like a great service. Apparently when a diabetic goes hypoglycemic they give off an acidic smell, which the dog can sense. This company trains the dogs to recognize your particular smell from when you were low: you send them a saliva sample or an item of your clothing you were wearing at the time. The dog will then be able to recognize your low more reliably than today’s best sensors, and are trained to alert you or wake you up. Very cool!
